QUETTA: In a groundbreaking initiative, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Netherlands and the School of Leadership Foundation (SLF) inaugurated the first Adolescent and Youth Friendly Space (AYFS) in Quetta under the ‘Aghaaz’ project on Saturday. This four-year initiative aims to establish AYFS centres in Islamabad, Peshawar and Quetta, providing safe, inclusive spaces where the youth can access resources, psychosocial support and skill-building opportunities. The AYFS at NUML Quetta will cater to diverse youth groups, including those with disabilities, offering services such as leadership development, career guidance, recreational activities and peer-led discussions. These centres are designed to operate under strict quality standards and ensure accessibility for all. With over two-thirds of Pakistan’s population under the age of 30, this initiative addresses the urgent need for youth engagement and empowerment. Sadia Atta, the provincial coordinator of UNFPA Pakistan, emphasised the broader vision behind the initiative. “These spaces represent a commitment to nurturing the potential of our youth and building an inclusive future.” In the coming months, AYFS centres will be established in Islamabad and Peshawar, expanding the reach of this initiative and creating a national network of youth-friendly spaces.
