KARACHI: His Excellency Khwaja Nazimuddin, Governor-General of Pakistan, opened the first-ever international industrial and commercial exhibition … at the Exhibition Ground, Mohammad Ali Jinnah Road, at 5 p.m. on Wednesday [Nov 30]. The Governor-General of Pakistan speaking at the opening ceremony said that the Exhibition was “unique” as it was for the first time that almost all the Muslim countries were participating in it. To promote and expand trade between the Muslim countries, the Governor-General suggested that similar exhibitions should be organised every year in the various Muslim countries. Speaking of the International Islamic Economic Conference, the Governor-General said that he was happy to note that the delegates were anxious to improve the economic conditions in their respective countries and it was a happy augury that they evinced a desire for close co-operation in the matter. Apart from the material considerations, it was one of the primary injunctions of Islam that “we should strive for the welfare of the poor”, the Governor-General observed.
